The Women's Super League recorded its highest average attendance this weekend, with crowds passing 12,000 for the first time after four clubs moved their fixtures to the main stadiums they share with their men's teams.

Three years ago the average was below 7,000. The league attributes the rise to stadium moves, a new broadcast deal and the England team's success.

Players have long argued that the main stadiums were the point. “You cannot ask people to take the league seriously and then play in a training ground,” one captain said.

The league said it expected more clubs to follow.
