National Theatre names director from regional stage, passing over West End names
The appointment of a 41-year-old who has never run a London building was described by one board member as 'deliberate'

The National Theatre has appointed as its next director a 41-year-old who has spent her career running theatres in Leeds and Manchester and has never led a London building.
The choice, announced on Friday, passed over several West End producers and directors whose names had circulated for months. One board member described it as “deliberate”.
The incoming director said her priority would be touring: “A national theatre that most of the nation has to travel to is not finished.”
She takes over in September.
